Over 1 million marine animals (including mammals, fish, sharks, turtles, and birds) are killed each year due to plastic debris in the ocean [3<\/a>].

Certain plastic contains toxic additives that enter into the food chain [4].<\/u><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>

Plastic waste has detrimental effects on the health of our planet, especially marine life and its biodiversity. Microplastics escape the water filtration system, because of their tiny size. They end up either in the oceans or in other water bodies which cause serious environmental and food safety concerns [5<\/a>].<\/p>

How to tackle this issue?<\/h3>

80% of plastic debris comes from land and washes out to sea from our beaches, streets and highways [6<\/a>]. Even though cleaning existing debris from the oceans is as important, we first have to close the leak. This is why\u00a0Plastic Bank<\/a>\u2019s primary focus is to recover ocean-bound plastic waste, i.e. materials that haven't been landfilled and are likely to enter waterways.<\/p>
